How to Choose the Right Curtains

Posted on Real Estate May 9, 2017 by Jinny Martin

Many people buy curtains as an afterthought, but the wrong window treatments can ruin your room’s decor. The right curtains should match well with the rest of the room and make you and your family feel more comfortable. Here are some of the things you should consider to find the best curtains for your home.

The Type of Fabric

Fabrics like silk or velvet look beautiful in formal living rooms or dining rooms, but they’re usually dry clean only. Washable alternatives include silky rayon blends and cotton sateen. These curtains often have a thick lining to help insulate your home and block more sunlight. Thinner linen or cotton has a more casual feel, so it works well for bedrooms and casual living rooms or family rooms.

The Color

If you want the curtains to blend with the rest of your decor, choose a color that’s a few shades darker than the wall. You can also use a color that’s less dominant in the room, like a shade from your couch’s accent pillows. Don’t use curtains with patterns if you already have patterned furniture, bedding, or carpeting.

Length and Positioning

Hanging curtains higher than your window will make your ceilings look higher, and most designers put the curtain rod about six inches above the window frame. Measure your windows from the place where the curtains will hang for the best length. Most curtains are flush with the floor or the windowsill. For a more traditional look, leave an extra few inches of fabric on the floor.
