Decorating with a pattern can induce a range of emotions – anything from relaxation to drama or excitement. However, decorating your home with a pattern based approach can be tricky if you’ve never done it before. Here are some pattern tips you can follow to get started:

  • Proportion: one aspect you’ll need to consider is the proportion of the room that you are going to cover in patterns – aim for 40-60%.
  • Mixture of sizes: when doing patterns try to use a combination of small, medium, and large components. The eye will have a variety to look at as it moves across the room. In order to draw the eyes to certain parts of the room, use bigger patterns in those areas.
  • Colors: the colors you go with will ultimately determine the mood of the room. For a calming effect go with gray, green, or blue. On the other hand, if you want to induce an energized feel then go with taupe, sand, orange, yellow, red, and pink.
  • Limit the number of colors: try to use a mix of only a few colors to avoid over-complicating the pattern. Perhaps white with another color for contrast is the ideal way to go. A pattern can very quickly become confusing to the eye when there is too many different colors in a room.
